What is the purpose of wealth?

Jesus tells a story about a rich landowner whose harvest yielded more than his storage barns could hold. He couldn't let his crops rot in the field or give them away, so he hadto tear down the existing barns and build new, larger ones (Luke 12:16). Then he could sit back and relax after everything was stored - "to eat, drink and be merry. But God said to him, you fool, tonight your soul will be required. And this hoard of yours, whose will it be then? So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God" (Luke 12:19-21).

This affluent person's life was only material. He went from affluence to luxury. He did not stop to think that perhaps the reason God made him affluent was so he could pass something on to the less fortunate.
